The Art of Curating: Squidward-Master

Art of curating banner

The Art of Curating is a continuation of the Curator Knows Best blog series on the Sporcle Blog. The series features opinions, top-notch quizzes and quizmakers, bits of trivia, and even a joke at the end from Sporcle’s great curators.

SquidwardThis week, we feature Squidward-Master, curator of Spongebob.

How did you first get involved with Sporcle?
In 2013, my 4th grade class did the Countries of the World quiz to test our knowledge, but I didn’t actually really get into it until around January of last year (2018), when my friend showed me all the varieties of quizzes that were actually fun, unlike the quizzes we had to take in school. So in February, I created an account so I could play against him, and also to keep track of what quizzes I’ve played.

Why did you decide to be a curator for your subcategory?
Ever since I was 2 years old I’ve been watching Spongebob, even though I wasn’t alive during the Golden Era, the originals and even the new ones always made me laugh. Over the years I had become an overall Spongebob master, and when I saw the available spot for the Spongebob subcategory in mid-October, I immediately sent the email to the Sporcle Team with the whole thing you have to do, and I got accepted November 1st of 2018.

What’s your favourite trivia fact having to do with you subcategory?
Squidward is actually an octopus, but Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of the show, thought “Octoward” sounded too weird, so he just went with Squidward.

What are some of your favourite published quizzes from your subcategory?
Some of my absolute favorite published Spongebob quizzes on Sporcle are these by Treverbeast454, I’ve always loved word ladders, so this one also by Treverbeast454 was a good one, and this one by Cowboys277 I really like because Spongebob at times says smart things, so comparing his quotes with quotes by Nietzsche was actually a lot harder than one might think.

What are some of your favourite contributed quizzes from your subcategory?
I just found this quiz a few weeks ago, and I think it’s really cool, because it’s just simple trivia that gets progressively harder, and it makes it like it’s a real game show. That would be (this one by Pholicious. Another really cool contributed Spongebob quiz was this one by Creed89. This quiz is one of my favorites, because it comes from my absolute favorite episode from Spongebob, ‘The Camping Episode,’ and though it seems easy, there are little parts where if you don’t pay enough attention you may get it wrong.

What are your favourite quizzes from an entirely different category?
Besides Spongebob, I’ve also always been a bit of a geography fan, so this quiz was a fun challenge for me and my friends. I’m also a Harry Potter nerd, so (this quiz was a fun one to do after I hadn’t played it in a while and I wanted to make sure I still knew it.

Which Sporcle Group do you frequent most often?
I actually don’t get too involved in Sporcle groups, but every once in a while I’ll check the open curatorships just to see what’s there.

How can Sporclers in your subcategory best contact you?
Really the best way is to just directly message me on Sporcle, but if needed you can send me an email at b0ssguy300@gmail.com, just make sure to include your Sporcle username so I know who you are.

Are there any Sporclers whose quizzes you think merit more attention than they get?
Servasyuzfairly is an awesome Sporcler who makes some quality Spongebob quizzes, among lots of other really fun quizzes, and also Kanpo1 makes lots of really cool quizzes, also including some Spongebob, but mostly other things, some of which I haven’t even heard of, but I still had fun playing them. Kanpo1 was also the last Spongebob curator before me, and would always encourage me to do more, and also helped when I was having trouble with some stuff. I hope both of these amazing Sporclers continue to grow and make quizzes on Sporcle.

Haiku or favourite Dad Joke (or both):
It’s about a sponge
That lives in a pineapple
How does this make sense?

Thanks for the interview Squidward-Master!
