The Art of Curating: Quiztopia

The Art of Curating is a continuation of the Curator Knows Best blog series on the Sporcle Blog. The series features opinions, top-notch quizzes and quizmakers, bits of trivia, and even a joke at the end from Sporcle’s great curators.

quiztopiaThis week, we feature Quiztopia, curator of Clip.

How did you first get involved with Sporcle?
I was looking for sites that had a good selection of music quizzes and I found Sporcle, which was far better than any other quiz site at the time and still is!

Why did you decide to be a curator for your subcategory?
I’ve always loved music quizzes and several times a month I go to pub quizzes where you have to identify songs from a clip. So this seemed a natural role for me.

What’s your favourite trivia fact having to do with you subcategory?
Zager & Evans are the only act to have had a number 1 hit single in both the US and UK, and to not have any other charting song. Thus, their song ‘In The Year 2525’ is often considered the ultimate one-hit-wonder.

What are some of your favourite published quizzes from your subcategory?
Sporcle has published very few clip quizzes over the last few years. Most of the published clip quizzes are over 5 years old. The clip quizzes contributed since then are generally of a higher standard of production, as you would expect over time. There have been many great and original clip quizzes that have not been given the opportunity to be published. As such, I encourage less focus on published clip quizzes and more awareness of the many other great quizzes that have been contributed since then.

What are some of your favourite contributed quizzes from your subcategory?
Quizzes with an exceptionally clever idea are often compiled over a period of months or years. It’s not possible to sit down one afternoon and think of enough examples that fulfill the quiz’s criteria. This one by hcd199 is a perfect example.
I love clip quizzes with a wide variety of genres, including stuff that doesn’t normally make it to audiences in the US or the UK. This series by JeroAdmi is fantastic for its variety and you’ll probably find stuff you like that you’ve never heard of before.
It’s always exciting to get a new regular contributor to your subcategory who produces good quality quizzes. I like this series by RobboPOSH and welcome him to our subcategory.

What are your favourite quizzes from an entirely different category?
This series containing about a selected country is beautifully presented and thoroughly researched. I can’t praise it enough.
Identifying celebrities from unusual photographs is always fun

Which Sporcle Group do you frequent most often?
I’m not a frequent visitor of any of the groups but if I have a question about a quiz I’m thinking of making, I visit the relevant group and there always seems to be knowledgeable people who can give a good answer.

How can Sporclers in your subcategory best contact you?
Send me a message through Sporcle. I’m happy to give out my email address if more detailed clip-making advice is needed.

Are there any Sporclers whose quizzes you think merit more attention than they get?
The above series by pecheneg deserves far more plays than it’s got so far. A Publish would help. Also, for whatever reason, clip quizzes have only been published a couple of times over the last several years. The contributors to our subcategory deserve more reward for their efforts than they have received so far. Music is a popular category and for sure there are thousands of people who would enjoy our clip quizzes who but just aren’t aware of the quizzes that we have available.

Haiku or favourite Dad Joke (or both):
Why did the invisible man turn down the job offer? He couldn’t see himself doing it.

Thanks for the interview Quiztopia!
