I’m sure you didn’t doubt that this interview was coming soon, but today is the day for El_Dandy to take on the Sporcleverse. It’s easy to Marvel at his accomplishments, both on and off Sporcle. Just for fun, I’ll say he’s a Sporcle editor, curator, quizmaker and Teacher Tournament Champion on Jeopardy! Oh, and he’s earned the Big Three, which reminds me, let’s cut to the interview!
When did you first start quiz making and how long did it take you to earn the Big Three?
I technically started quiz making in 2011, but didn’t really start until October 2014. Between 2011 and 2014, I only released eight quizzes. It took about a year and a half (if you start in 2014) for me to earn all three of the trifecta badges. I earned the Honor Roll and Dean’s List on the same day (about a year after I started actively creating quizzes) and Crazy Ivan about six months later.
What was your first ever pick and what was your reaction? What about your first publish?
My first ever pick was an EP in Entertainment for a quiz about famous people named Roger (subsequently published as ‘Click a Roger’). I actually didn’t realize that Editor and Curator Picks were a thing at the time, and I’m pretty sure earning that Editor Pick gave me the bug. My first publish was about four months later, for an Entertainment quiz about Broadway musicals.
What category did you struggle with the most? Which one was the easiest?
Religion and Science were (and still are) difficult for me. I struggle for ideas to this day with both. Just For Fun is easiest in terms of publishes, but I’m never at a loss for Sports or Music ideas either.
Who helped you, or inspired you, the most to earn these badges?
Did you actively try to earn any of the badges? If so, when and why did you start?
Yes, I was pretty active in trying to earn the badges. There’s a reason I’ve got every badge! Once I got that first EP, the Dean’s List and Crazy Ivan were high priorities (Honor Roll launched a few weeks after I started).
What is the most rewarding part of making quizzes?
The most rewarding part of quiz making is the process itself. I genuinely don’t mind if a quiz of mine only gets 1 play; I genuinely love putting the work in. That said, positive reactions ARE always nice!
Which of your published quizzes are you the proudest of?
I’m proudest of my Elements Out of Place quiz. The amount of work it took for me to make it was absurd — almost three weeks of coding, mapping, and photoshopping, and it drove me crazy to make. It’s been one of my best received quizzes though and FINALLY got me my first Science EP.
Any advice for would-be badge earners/quizmakers?
My best advice is to find a quizmaker you really enjoy and figure out what they do. Don’t copy them, but learn from them.
Thanks again for El_Interview! Of course, whenever you have a published quiz with a 4.9 rating, you know it has to be good. I would also like to point out that El_Dandy and bhenderson79 are tied for the most badges of all time, which means that New Jersey is making the rest of us look bad.
